Frequently Asked Questions

  • We provide most of what you need for your float experience, including earplugs, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair dryer, and straighteners. However, we do recommend that you bring a towel and hairbrush for your convenience. Also, please note that it's best to float naked, so there's no need to bring a swimsuit.

  • Do:

    • Have a light meal approximately 2 hours before your session. We recommend waiting 3-4 hours after a large meal before floating.

    • Drink a small glass of water before your float session and stay hydrated afterwards.

    • Use the bathroom just before your float session.

    • Put your phone on silent to prevent any disruptions during the float.

    Don't:

    • Drink caffeine right before your float session. We recommend avoiding caffeine or stimulants for 3-4 hours prior to your float session so you can fully relax in the tank.

    • Drink large amounts of fluids right before your float session.

    • Shave 24 hours before your float session as shaving can cause skin irritation.

  • Certain individuals may not be able to float due to various medical conditions or circumstances. These include:

    • Having open wounds or skin ulcers,

    • Suffering from any contagious disease, including diarrhea or gastroenteritis,

    • Recently dying hair. Dyed hair needs to have been washed at least 3 times or to the point where colour has stopped running out of it,

    • Getting a new tattoo (we recommend waiting 30 days before floating), or applying tanning products within the last 72 hours,

    • Having henna colouring in hair or a henna tattoo,

    • Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs,

    • Having uncontrolled epilepsy,

    • Having serious heart or kidney problems, or serious psychological conditions,

    • Being unsure of your ability to get out of the tank due to mobility issues (we advise bringing someone with you to assist if needed).

If you have low blood pressure, a pacemaker, a serious heart condition, or kidney disease, we recommend seeking medical advice before floating.

Please note that individuals under the age of 18 must have a legal guardian present to float.

  • We currently have two float tanks available at our premises, which means that we can accommodate only two people at a time.

  • We're sorry, but our float tanks are designed to accommodate only one person at a time. However, since we have two tanks available, you and your partner or friend can book two separate sessions at the same time and enjoy floating independently. Keep in mind that float therapy is meant to be a solitary experience, allowing you to disconnect from distractions and focus on yourself.

  • Don't worry about finding a parking spot – we have free parking options available at our location. You can park at the front of the shop, in the small car park around the corner, or on the street for free.

We are located at 481 Great Western Road, Aberdeen, AB10 6NN.

  • You can find our pricing information on our website store at this link: https://merakihealth.floathelm.com/store.

We offer a range of packages and memberships to make floating more affordable, so you can easily incorporate it into your regular self-care routine.

  • If you are concerned about feeling claustrophobic or scared of the dark, please be assured that our float tanks are quite spacious. They are over 2 meters high, 2 meters long, and 1.45 meters wide. Additionally, we have a starlight effect ceiling which many of our clients find calming. If you still feel anxious, you can leave the lights on during your float session. You have complete control over the environment, and if you feel uncomfortable at any time, you can leave the tank.

  • It is quite common for people to fall asleep during their float session, as the deep relaxation achieved can naturally lead to sleepiness. However, there is no need to worry about drowning as the water is only 10 inches deep and the high concentration of salt makes it difficult to accidentally turn onto your side or face-down. Additionally, we provide a head float ring to give you extra peace of mind.

To ensure that you don't oversleep, we play music during the last 5 minutes of your session and turn on the lights. This is usually enough to wake most people up.

  • To maintain the quality of our tanks and ensure your safety, we advise against floating if you have recently dyed your hair or have a fresh tattoo or spray tan.

If your hair dye still washes out or leaves traces on towels, it's best to wait before floating - this normally takes 3/4 washes. With red hair dye, we require at least 30 days before floating, and you must wear a tight-fitted swim cap. Please note that we may charge up to £850 for any damages caused to our tanks due to hair dye.

For new tattoos, we recommend waiting 4-6 weeks before floating to avoid discomfort.

We recommend waiting at least 72 hours after applying fake tan before floating, as the salt in the tank can strip the product off the skin.

  • If you have hair extensions, it is generally safe to use a float therapy tank, but it is important to take a few precautions to prevent damage to both your extensions and the tank. Here are some things to keep in mind:

    • Tie your hair up in a bun or braid to keep it out of your face and prevent tangles.

    • After your float session, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove any salt residue.

If you have had a keratin treatment, it is generally recommended to wait at least 4 weeks before using a floatation tank, as the saltwater can potentially damage the treatment. We recommend consulting with your hairdresser before your float session if you have any concerns.

  • Your float session in the tank will last for one hour, and we recommend that you arrive at the premises 5 minutes early to allow yourself time to relax before entering the float. For first-time floaters, we ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete necessary paperwork and receive an orientation.

Please note that before and after your float, you must shower to remove any oils or products from your body. We provide shower facilities and a beauty room where you can do your hair, makeup, and take your time getting ready while enjoying complimentary refreshments.

We suggest allowing 1 hour and 30 minutes for your appointment, including the one-hour float session, time to shower and get ready, and any additional relaxation time you may want to enjoy at the premises.

  • We recommend that you enter the tank naked to maximize your experience, but if you feel more comfortable wearing a swimsuit, you may do so. However, the fabric may press against the skin and become a distraction. We want to minimize all distractions, so you can get the most out of the float experience.

Please be assured that each float tank is located in a private room and comes with its own lock, ensuring complete privacy during your session.

  • The cleanliness of our float tanks is a top priority. We use a powerful filtration system to clean the tank between each client, with a minimum of four cleanings per session. The water is filtered using a 1-micron filtration system, ultraviolet rays, and hydrogen peroxide, and we maintain the pH level to ensure the water stays at its cleanest. Additionally, the high concentration of Epsom salt in the water creates an environment that inhibits the growth of bacteria and microorganisms.

Our float tanks are far cleaner than most swimming pools. Our staff members clean the float tank, the room, the shower, and check the float solution between every session to ensure the highest level of cleanliness. You can be assured that the water in our tanks is pristine clean and safe for your use.

  • We recommend removing your contact lenses before entering the tank to avoid any potential discomfort or irritation to your eyes. The high concentration of salt in the water can cause stinging and redness if it gets into your eyes, and the prolonged exposure to the water can cause the lenses to dry out and stick to your eyes.

We suggest bringing a container to store your contact lenses during the float session and wearing glasses instead.

  • We highly recommend wearing earplugs during the float session as it can help prevent saltwater from building up in your ears, which can be uncomfortable. However, it is entirely optional and ultimately up to your personal preference. We provide free foam and silicone earplugs in the float room for your convenience.

For your first float, we recommend trying them out to see what works best for you.

  • Yes, you can float while pregnant, especially during the second and third trimesters. It can be very beneficial for expectant mothers, as the weightlessness of the water can help alleviate pressure on the body and ease aches and pains. Some women even find float therapy a great way to increase the connection with their baby.

However, if you have any concerns we recommend checking with your healthcare provider before trying float therapy, as every pregnancy is different. Additionally, we recommend against floating after 36/37 weeks, as the risk of water breaking during the session increases at this stage of pregnancy.

  • It is generally safe to float while menstruating, but we recommend taking the same precautions you would when going swimming. You should wear a tampon or menstrual cup during your float session to avoid any leakage.

  • If you want to book an extended float session please contact us by email or phone and we will try arrange that for you.

  • When you come for your first float, we suggest you approach the experience without any specific expectations. Each person's float experience is unique, and it may take some time for you to become comfortable and let go in the float tank environment. It's essential to note that floating requires practice and patience. You may find that meditation and letting go of thoughts are challenging at first, but don't be too hard on yourself.

We recommend floating at least three times before making a decision about whether it's right for you. This will give you an opportunity to become familiar with the tank's environment and enjoy all the benefits of float therapy. Keep an open mind and enjoy the experience.

  • It is rare to experience negative side effects from floating. However, some individuals may feel claustrophobic or anxious in the tank. If you are prone to claustrophobia or anxiety, we recommend floating with the tank door open or partially open until you become more comfortable.

If you have any open cuts or wounds, the high concentration of salt in the water can cause some discomfort. It is important to cover any open wounds with a vaseline before entering the tank.

Some individuals may experience nausea or motion sickness during or after a float session. If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend avoiding any sudden movements or splashing during your float.

Additionally, some individuals with sensitive skin may experience irritation or dryness due to the high concentration of Epsom salt in the water. If you have sensitive skin, we recommend applying petroleum jelly or a similar barrier cream to any areas that may be prone to irritation before entering the tank.

As with any new experience, it is important to listen to your body and communicate any discomfort or concerns with our staff. We want to ensure that you have the most enjoyable and beneficial experience possible.

If you have any other questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to assist you and answer any queries you may have.
